Heart & Soul

An exploration of where the soul truly exists within our physical form. When heart transplant recipients gain new memories, experience personality changes, have dreams of their donor, and even Western doctors admit to a mysterious phenomenon of “cell memory” then is the whole being contained within the organ, or the cell, or the genetic code? Or perhaps outside the physical form entirely?

This piece represents my curiosity about these themes – organ donation and the relationship between the two humans entwined in that corporeal contract: the ultimate sacrifice of the dead is symbolized by the goat skull, a common animal used in spiritual sacrificial ceremony. The dead is brought back to life through transplantation/transformation into another form and brings along vestiges of the previous life lived. This is represented here in several forms – dream creatures, monsters, and dolls, as well as the tiny goat tucked within a cavern of the heart.

The Mind’s Eyes

We do not see the world through our eyes - our eyes are simply the lens that look outward. It is the brain, the mind, that deciphers the world, reflects it back, changes its orientation, sends it back and makes sense of it. When the occipital lobe of the brain is damaged, the eyes will no longer function though they are perfectly healthy. This piece explores navigation through the darkness using our primal senses and peeling open the mind's eye to reveal our truth, like the ancient Seekers of wisdom & knowledge

Butterflies In My Stomach

It is remarkable how much a stomach looks like a cocoon. This similarity made me think – for some unknown reason – of the expression of having “butterflies in our stomach” – that fluttery feeling of excitement, anxiety, thrill, maybe even dread. It is true that the primarily on a biological level, the stomach digests our food. However it also plays a role in processing our emotions, digesting our experiences. When we have a “gut” reaction to something, aren’t we acknowledging our stomach’s role in our intuition? This piece juxtaposes the stomach and the cocoon, held within the biosphere of an egg.
