Sacred Geometry & Mandalas

Earth

All matter begins with the building blocks of the universe – miniscule particles that mysteriously join to become all forms of life, to breathe, breed, grow and ultimately, unfailingly, fall apart, decay and return to source – unlimited potential and possibility.

The center of the mandala shows a lily growing from the loamy muck of the primordial world, surging through darkness towards the brilliance of life above the surface. This inspires a vast network of mushrooms and fungus that communicate with each other, retelling fables of eons past, long before the showiness and extravagance of the coloured petals. They are surrounded by a ring of precious diamonds, formed by the crushing oppression of the earth into soft mineral, forging a new identity, an indestructible thorn, patiently waiting to be recognized for its resilience.

Scarabs busily roll balls of dung, gently patty-caking the peaty nurseries that will swaddle their eggs. Egyptians honored the scarab as a symbol of reincarnation – new generations of beetles miraculously appear from underground catacombs lovingly tended by family that would not live to meet them.

Air

Air is the conduit for movement & migration through physical space, just observe the Monarch butterflies that migrate to Mexico each year. They migrate generationally, carrying the wisdom of past years’ pilgrimages in their collective memory. This journey simultaneously occurs through metaphysical space – the butterfly is a common symbol of the soul departing the body and migrating to a higher realm.

Wisps and wafts of wind carry the seagulls flying through air over water - straddling the two worlds and existing in both at once. They fish over open sea and screech at the unjustness of the world, soaring over vast watery plains without fear.

Honeybees also embody flight, as well as boundless productivity. Their humming, thrumming vibration thickens the air, they are most often heard before they are seen, tirelessly and thanklessly impregnating the Earth’s crops before returning home to repeat the servitude the next day and every day.

The upward-facing triangle is seen throughout the mandala, referencing the alchemical symbol of Air as well as the excitement and joy of outward expansion in all directions. Air will not be constrained, contained or underestimated.

Fire

How to tap into the beauty of the flame, recognizing and appreciating its power without fear of the ruins it can leave behind?

It began by accepting the truth that to initiate great change, sometimes the existing structures need to be demolished.

This mandala celebrates the power of heat and fire in all its manifestations – reading from the center, the Phoenix is surrounded by a starry sky – literal balls of fire burning eons away, in the constellations of Aries, Sagittarius and Leo – the cardinal Fire signs of the Zodiac. She is encircled by a circle of brass rings, forged in fire. The next ring of the mandala is a repeating pattern of the Heart of Passion – a Christian symbol of Jesus’ undying and transformative Love. Contrast this with the next ring – bullets – ammunition for firearms, tools of destruction, or transformation from life to death in a metaphysical sense. Next, exploding and erupting volcanoes remind us that we live on a planet which is at its core all-consuming, unpredictable lava which has flowed over and consumed entire civilizations, and will do so again. Fire flies gently light the way forward and lull us with their twinkling lights, and welcoming warmth, romance and blurring the memory of past losses and sorrows.

Water

Water, the essential element for the inception of life on earth. The first beings originated in water and eventually crawled out of the murk onto land.

The center of this Mandala is a Compass Rose, the nautical symbol of navigation and spiritual symbol of finding one’s way, navigating life’s unknown waters and seeking direction from the stars.

Water is the conduit for electrical energy, neural impulses and is the life-supporting medium for creation, impregnation, birth, and metamorphosis. Aqueous mossy green algae feed newly hatched tadpoles – that are a microcosm of evolution – from egg to tadpole to frog.

Red coral brilliantly contrasts the blue greens surrounding it and allude to our circulatory system just as the great oceans are the life force of the planet Earth.

Wafts of wind carry the flying fish through air over water and back into the surf - straddling the two worlds and existing in both at once. The pattern of waves evoke the tide – rising and lowering – high and low - and are inspired by ancient art honouring their omnipotence and beauty.

All these forms of life-sustaining water are contained within the ring of Earth’s biosphere – a delicate film ensuring all of our survival, like a fragile bubble perfect in its wholeness.

Aether

The vastness of Space. The Void. The quintessence of life and the mystery of creation

This mandala reflects the eruption from Nothingness to the miracle of Creation seen as a lotus flower evolving and devolving simultaneously – to crystalline structures and then back to Space and Deep Space

A crown of Thorns reminds us of the burden of Life as well as the burden of Logic – with humans requiring an explanation, rationalization and categorization of every Unknowable Mystery

All in encircled by a tortoiseshell, representing both the indigenous Creation story of Turtle Island and also the ancient Earth calendar – every tortoise shell has 13 inner sections surrounded by 28 plates – totalling 364 days and 13 full moons per cycle on this planet

At the centre of the mandala a small tortoise sits within the lotus, its shell the deepest Void of the universe, both drawing the awareness inwards and looking outwards as the eye’s Iris

Glowing wormholes burn away the inky blackness, symbolizing Light’s triumph over Darkness

Fight & Flight

Dreamcatcher, web, shield – catch, release and protect

The delicate strength of a feather – uplift, flight and freedom

Arrows through air – focus, aimed at goals, and steadfastness

The upward-facing triangle is throughout the mandala, referencing the alchemical symbol of Air as well as the excitement and joy of outward expansion in all directions. Let your heart soar through the boundless sky and feel the safety and presence of your guides protecting you from any fail or falter.

Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride

The Three Fates, our spiritual golden thread, the Wheel of Life. Sacred Geometry and watercolour veil painting combine in a piece inspired by the Greek legend of the 3 crones, who ultimately cut every human life's golden cord, causing our death. None of us know how long we have and when our cord will be cut. And we are on this spontaneous journey now - buy the ticket, take the ride!
